The rising demand for stainless steel means that the responsible and efficient use of our resources is becoming increasingly important. That is why the Oryx Stainless Group commissioned the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT in late 2009 with a detailed study. The goal was to examine and quantify how far harmful CO2 emissions could be reduced by using a large percentage of high-quality secondary raw material blends instead of primary raw materials to produce new stainless steel.
The results are compelling: According to the calculations by Fraunhofer UMSICHT, each tonne of stainless steel scrap blend used reduces CO2 emissions by an average of over 4.5 t. Based on the forecast global production in 2015, using 75% stainless steel scrap blend for the production of new stainless steel would allow CO2 reductions equal to the annual emissions of a megacity with over 10 million inhabitants.
